Hectic Night in Niagara

Some unexpected tragedy involving a trespasser this evening. The daily Toronto-Niagara Falls VIA train #95 struck and killed a trespasser at the Grimsby Station, in Grimsby, ON. Coincidentally, the Amtrak Maple Leaf (New York-Toronto) also was involved in the incident. It is operated as a VIA train in Canada, (train #98) so that makes 2 VIA trains involved in a fatal hit. I managed to catch the Maple Leaf here in St. Catharines, about 15 mins before the incident. P42DC #54 was leading. A good 20 minutes later, an SD70i and SD75i lead manifest freight #330 through St. Catharines, enroute to Port Robinson from Sarnia. GO Transit's second day of service to the Niagara Region for 2011 is a mess as well. The Toronto-bound GO, due to arrive in St. Catharines at 7:45pm was not allowed to depart from Niagara Falls due to the collision in Grimsby, and the fact that both tracks were occupied by the incident trains. The Niagara Falls-bound GO was not allowed to leave Toronto either. Buses were to Niagara to accomodate those who did not have bikes. This was also the day GO saw the most riders with bikes. Yes, GO does have cars fitted out for bike carrying on weekends. Quite a mess.

Pics will be up on my flickr page very shortly.

**UPDATE**

As of about 9:20pm, VIA 95 was given the all clear to proceed to Niagara Falls. Relatively quick delay for such an incident. It was estimated it could take up to 4 or 5 hours. 2 isn't bad compared to that.
